Edo Stake Governor Godwin Obaseki yesterday inaugurated Professor Kessington Obahiagbon as Chairman of the Edo State Committee for Science, Technology and Innovation, charged with developing strategy which will make the state a hub for science, technology and innovation.
Obaseki, at the committee’s inauguration at Government House, Benin City, said the move was part of the government’s efforts to spur growth in various sectors of the state, by leveraging technology.
He said, “As you all know, today’s world is technology driven and any state or government that does not benefit from scientific development and information will be left in the dark. The COVID-19 era has shown that technology is important to any state that wishes to survive the upheaval caused by the pandemic.
“We are lucky, blessed and fortunate to be affiliated with experts and leaders in the field of the proliferation of science and technology. We thought that these people should come together as a group to help us articulate, very clearly, the direction we should take in terms of building a new science and technology society. “
Obaseki listed some of the committee’s terms of reference, including assisting the state in drafting a science, technology and innovation policy, as stipulated in the national science, technology and innovation policy.
“The committee should also help the state develop a strategy to improve awareness of grassroots science, technology and innovation.
“They should help craft a strategy that will make Edo State the center of science, technology and innovation inside and outside the country. If we become a tech hub, we can now proliferate technology across Nigeria. In addition, the committee should help develop a strategy for the deployment of science, technology and innovation through public-private partnership collaborations, ”he said.
In response, Professor Obahiagbon thanked Obaseki for the privilege accorded to the committee to serve the state.
“I want to assure you that the committee would do its best to put the state on a world map in terms of science, technology and innovation,” he said.
