L&T to Collaborate with IIT Bombay for Development of Green Hydrogen Technology

Bombay: Larsen & Toubro (L&T), an Indian multinational engaged in EPC projects, High-tech manufacturing and Services, signed an agreement with the Indian Institute of Technology Bombaythe first technology and research institution in the country to jointly pursue research and development in the green hydrogen value chain.

The two institutions have joined forces to contribute to the development of the green hydrogen industry by India and develop next-generation technology in this emerging field.

L&T’s engineering expertise, product scaling and commercialization know-how, and IIT Bombay’s cutting-edge research in hydrogen technologies will help this partnership achieve its goal.

Commenting on the occasion, Mr. SN Subrahmanyan, CEO and Managing Director of L&T, said, “L&T has always been at the forefront of technological advancement and indigenization in India across sectors. We are positioning ourselves to stimulate the green hydrogen economy in India with our partners.’

“Our partners and customers are also eager to leverage our ability to reduce costs and industrialize green hydrogen. This collaboration with IIT Bombay and its world-class technologists will support the cause of developing competitive indigenous technologies at scale. worldwide and will encourage India towards AatmaNirbhar in green hydrogen technology.’

Speaking about the collaboration, Prof. Sous-hasis ChaudhuriDirector, IIT Bombay said: “Given the urgency of the climate crisis and india own ambitious goal of becoming net zero by 2070, the transition from fossil fuels to green hydrogen will play a key role in this goal. india National Hydrogen Mission is a step in the right direction, and I am confident that our partnership with L&T will result in scalable and cost-effective solutions. IIT Bombay’s endeavor is to contribute meaningfully to challenges of national importance, and our association with L&T to develop technologies for green hydrogen that can make India autonomous in this space, is an example.

Technology plays a central role in the growth of an emerging industry like green hydrogen. Research and development in areas aimed at improving energy efficiency, reliability and reducing equipment costs are key to improving affordability and, therefore, wide-scale adoption of green hydrogen in India is the need of the hour. Recognizing this, L&T, as an industry partner, is collaborating with IIT Bombay to support the development of India’s R&D ecosystem and technology leadership in the industry.

The central government in February 2022 notified the Green Hydrogen Policy aimed at boosting the production of green hydrogen and green ammonia to help the country become a global hub for the green version of the molecule. For countries like IndiaWith its ever-increasing oil and gas import bill, Green Hydrogen will help provide critical energy security by reducing global reliance on imported fossil fuels.
